Each blade is cut, tapered and set at a slight angle, so the ring of wood around the dial looks as though it is still turning. The effect is strongest in raking light, when every blade throws a shadow onto the one behind it.
At the centre sits a plain disc with a brass 12 and slim brass batons for the other hours, plus brass hands. Nothing else — the spiral does the work.
It is a good answer to a wall that needs one round thing: over a fireplace, in a stairwell, or on the short wall of a dining room. The movement is a silent sweep, so it stays quiet.
The movement takes a single AA battery, which cannot be shipped by air; buy one locally and fit it in seconds.

Dust with a dry, soft cloth. Keep it off damp walls and out of long direct sunlight; wood moves a little with the seasons, which is normal. A light coat of furniture oil once a year keeps the colour rich.
