The dial is split. One side is left plain so the hands stay easy to read; the other is carved into stacked wavy layers in alternating tones, the way a river looks on a contour map.
The layers are cut individually and stepped, so the relief catches side light and changes through the day. Brass batons mark the hours around the rim and the hands are brass to match.
At 45 cm it is a normal clock size that does an unusual amount of work on a plain wall — a kitchen, a study or a hallway where you want texture without hanging a picture.
The movement is a silent sweep. It takes one AA battery, which cannot be shipped by air; buy one locally and fit it in seconds.

Dust with a dry, soft cloth. Keep it off damp walls and out of long direct sunlight; wood moves a little with the seasons, which is normal. A light coat of furniture oil once a year keeps the colour rich.
